“There’s an important difference between giving up and letting go. Surrendering to the labour is sometimes hard for those who like to be in control.” ~ Jessica Hatchigan
Before the world of Frozen had captured my children’s hearts, before the toys had found their way into our home and taken over my living room, with that song driving me mad after the 100th rendition, there was a whole different meaning to the words “Let it Go.”
Do you ever notice that sometimes when you are working or going about your day, everything just seems to flow and feels almost effortless, while other times it feels like you are pushing uphill or hitting your head against a wall and getting nowhere?
I have experienced this many times in life and yes, during my first labour as well. That feeling of pushing and straining with not much to show for it ( except for tearing later…lol)
Here is a bit of wisdom and new mantra for you to remember the next time it is just not happening for you and that includes labour ~
“If it Doesn’t Flow, Let it Go……”
So what does that mean exactly?
Well, this might be a good time to take a break and tune in……
Please note: This does not mean giving up, just giving in……do you need to grab a drink? take a nap? (this is exactly what I did during my first labour as I was thoroughly exhausted after many hours of active labour and was totally supported in this “giving in” stage in the loving arms of my hubby, bless him.
I have no idea how long it lasted (I was totally off the planet and that’s where I needed to be!) but what I can tell you is, it was the BEST thing I could have done as it restored my energy reserves and enabled me to dig deep and find inner strength and resources I didn’t know I had. (along with good sips of my power drink) Giving in was just what I needed to get through without relying on medical pain relief to keep going. My completely drug-free birth became a reality. Hooray for that!!
Give yourself permission, let yourself off the hook.
Do you need to go for a walk? A change of scenery is always a good thing to clear the head and find your flow, especially if that stress monster has taken over and you are wondering where your calm, centred self has gone.
Perhaps you need to change tasks altogether and come back to it later with a fresh perspective and new energy??
Whatever it is that you need right now, do it and do it with full permission and surrender.
If you honour yourself and your needs and truly go with the flow of life, you will be back in the swing in no time at all and be sooooo much better for it.
The feminine way of BE-ing and not just DO-ing truly ROCKS. And this is coming from someone who was all about pushing through and achieving, thinking I had to do things in a masculine way to get the job done ~ with perseverance, strain and force. Well I was SO wrong…….
Promise me this: The next time you come up against the wall in life or in labour…….
Try this mantra and tell me if it works for you. In any aspect. I would LOVE to hear.
But be warned; It might just change your life. For the better 😉
Yours in loving surrender,
Katrina Zaslavsky
